Near the

be the oldest in town. A glance at the external
contours of this listed building gives a clue to its Tudor origins. It
was once part of the Gunter Mansion which unsuccessfully hid the last
Catholic priest to be burnt at the stake in Britain. The interior once
comprised three rooms but was opened out many years ago to provide
today's open plan bar with a separate pool room on a lower
level. Note the great oak beams
with smaller transverse beams, from where above the bar
counter hang a number of old Whitbread Tankards, a link
to its former ownership. The large fireplace
was rescued from a demolished Tudor house and
provides an apt focal point. A quiet rear
garden belies the pub's town centre position.

Five Alls
Hocker Hill Street NP16 5ER

3-11 (midnight Fri - Sun)
An old pub built in 1849 on a cobblestoned street with a superb sign
above the entrance depicting the "Five Alls". A set of stocks, sadly
dispensed with a few years ago, once stood outside where there is now a
limited seating area. The interior retains most of the original layout
with some touches of modernity like TV screens. An old Webbs Brewery
table is near the front door, a reminder of a former licensee who
hailed from Abertillery, not far from Webb’s’ old
Aberbeeg base. The emphasis here is very much on music with a digital
juke box and live music while guitar players are welcome. Hobgoblin is
a favourite although it sometimes gives way to a different guest beer.

Comfortable and well appointed late 19th century residential hotel,
re-opened in April 2008 after an extensive refurbishment by new owners
Smith & Jones. The long wall behind the bar is part of
Chepstow's 13th century fortifications, enclosing the old town and the
building stands beside the ancient town arch. The interior is spacious
and offers several sections to drink and dine. The menu is extensive
and lists popular traditional pub meals both light and main, including
Steak & Old Peculiar Pie and own recipe burgers (meals 11am
– 9pm). TVs are dotted around to bring company bulletins plus
Sky and Setanta sports channels while background music adds to the
atmosphere. A beer festival is held at the time of Halloween.

Formerly the Grape Escape, then the Grape, this pleasant cafe bar cum
pub/restaurant strikes a genuine note while adding a touch of
sophistication to the town’s drink/dining options. Handy for
thirsty shoppers in the town's only pedestrian street, the interior is
on several levels and the decor makes much use of wood with wooden
dining furniture; note also the ornate carving beneath the bar counter.
A small library is at the top end of the premises while plenty of
pictures hang from the walls. A vast choice of dishes figure on a menu
that is supplemented by daily specials. Community events are held such
as quiz nights on Sunday evenings, jazz nights and Louise Gains
International Arts Days on the last Thursday of the month. It seems to
appeal to all ages and has a nice relaxed atmosphere. Free Wi-Fi
available.

those, sited above the fish tank, depicting the climb up Ben

turn leads to a large walled outdoor seating area. Down the short
corridor is a more spacious bar and games section while the
former skittles alley has been converted into cafe
cum coffee bar. Downstairs is an extensive cellar where history has it
that Chartist activists hid gunpowder in ovens to keep it dry prior to
their fateful march to Newport in 1839. The cellar has its
own bar that has served as an occasional music venue

Brains Brewery breathed new life into this old roadside inn with
extensive structural repairs and a tasteful refurbishment in late 2007.
This saw the interior opened out to link the former public bar (and one
time smoke room) with the lounge. The former is now a cosy drinking
area with a fireplace as its focal point while the latter is the domain
of diners where the new food operation has taken off successfully.
There are plans to add a conservatory in due course.

The former Moonraker Inn, that in its
last days hit on lean times, has been successfully remodelled
by JD Wetherspoon (JDW) to bring to the town centre a welcome
choice of real ales in a town where choice is scarce. The standard
nationally listed ales sit alongside interesting guest ales,
frequently from Welsh breweries but also from small breweries
from much further afield. Handpulled Westons cider is also available.
The popular JDW format of a spacious interior with several seating
areas applies here although the lack of natural light in the
central area gives a constant subdued lighting
effect. Handily placed, it is just a couple of minutes from
the bus station, five minutes from the railway station, and
adjacent to the shopping mall. Free parking
is nearby.

Homely family run pub situated in what could be described as
the
ecclesiastical centre of Cwmbran, it having several religious
establishments as neighbours. The "Mount" offers pleasant and
comfortable surroundings in a spacious open plan interior. Tastefully
furnished using a rich dark red decor for carpets and upholstered
seating, there are broadly three sections, including a raised area. It
attracts a good mix of a generally mature clientele who help create a
friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The patio at the front of the
premises has a sheltered area. Bar meals are about to be introduced as
is Sunday lunch where booking is advisable. Thursday quiz nights
are well supported. An adventurous guest beer policy has
introduced local real ale drinkers to a wide range of beers from near
and far, some rarely seen in the area. The pub carries CAMRA's LocAle
accreditation with Brains beers featuring on a regular basis among
other locally sourced
ales.

Attractive old pub that has grown considerably since it first
served the local farming community. Today it
has several linked sections with some on different
levels. While the emphasis is on the popular food offering
(with seasonal variations) it still accommodates
those just wanting a quiet drink. A recent
refurbishment has seen the emergence of a
lighter decor and contemporary furnishings that blend
quite well with their surroundings to retain a
traditional country inn feel. Bus stop nearby, and a splendid entrance
up steps from the carpark. The WV "Blackbirds" is actually Butty Bach.

Typical smart conversion by JD Wetherspoon of former shop premises that
has enhanced the local drinking scene bringing with it a good range of
cask beers and cider. Named after a former Lord Lieutenant of the
County and member of a great coal and steel industry owning dynasty,
much local history is depicted on the walls clearly illustrating the
rich industrial heritage of the area. The interior is spacious with
various sections offering a variety of seating from comfy sofas to
traditional dining tables and chairs. A balcony at the rear caters for
smokers and outdoor drinking. Designated as a Lloyds No.1 bar there is
a large TV screen bringing music through the ages as well as major
sporting events.

CAMRA award winning pub, offering a wide selection of ales, often
including welsh independents, an extensive menu of appetising food and
a friendly atmosphere. Its canalside location adds to its appeal while
the garden is popular with families. Originally a cowman's cottage in
the late seventeenth century, it later served as a wash house, before
being extended and called the Railway Hotel, passing to brewers
Phillips of Newport. Being on the canal, the pub was ideally suited for
deliveries of beer by barge. Phillips were taken over by Simonds, which
became part of Courage in 1960. Courage decided to change the name and
held a competition to find a new name. A local steelworker won a barrel
of beer for his entry; "The Open Hearth".

A hillside village pub very much at the hub of the surrounding
community. It was saved from near dereliction in the early 1980s. The
result of this labour of love has seen emerge a traditional pub
interior that could almost have been there for many decades. The
landlady has a photograph album recording progress from the time her
family lived in caravans while restoration work was underway to the
hugely successful opening night. The main public bar has a cosy feel
with plenty of artefacts dotted around and has as its focal point a
large fireplace. Perhaps the only bow to modernity is the presence of
large modern TV screens for sport etc. There are five letting rooms
giving fine views over the valley. A mountain stream running through
the cellar helps maintain a cool temperature. A
former Rhymney house, draught Bass is the regular beer offering.
