Large grey stone residential hotel perched on an embankment overlooking the Ebbw Valley and above the main road into Ebbw Vale. Built in 1899 and formerly in the ownership of Webbs Brewery, the elegant exterior is typical of the Victorian era. Entry through a high arched doorway gives access to a reception area with a magnificent staircase and a small seating area with a Chesterfield suite. The cosy lounge bar has two sections each with a ;fireplace. The lounge gives access to a pleasant conservatory restaurant, including an outside area, that gives fine views across the valley and where fine food may be savoured. The large public bar is comfortably furnished and hosts live entertainment most weeks. The hotel is 5 minutes walk from Ebbw Vale Parkway railway station (bus link to town centre) and is served by local bus services

Convenient for Llandegfeth reservoir, with  facilities for boating, fishing and wind-surfing, there are also good  walks and golfing in the area. The large beer garden has camping  facilities adjacent. The restaurant emphasises the choice of local  produce, as do the beers where one guest ale is usually from Wye Valley Brewery.

If there is a pub that should be visited at least once in a lifetime, this is it. Situated amongst the stunning ruins of an 11th century abbey in the heart of the Black Mountains, where the silence can be deafening, this cellar bar is in what was, centuries ago part of the abbot's house. The accommodation is amazing and reached by a spiral staircase in one of the old abbey towers, although the rooms, being ancient, do not qualify as "en suite".

12-11 (winter hours vary); Sun 12-10.30
Recently re-opened after an 18 month lay-off, the Cherry Tree offers  real ales from smaller independents  plus cask (Bulmers Traditional) and bottled ciders. A wide choice of home-cooked food includes renowned curries. Hugely extended some years ago to add dining space and accommodation facilities, the pub's ground floor is the village shop and post office. To appreciate the scale of the extension, the original single bar is up some steps - where the old entrance used to be - at the rear and to the right of the bar counter. A sheltered patio is ideal for fine and wet weather drinking and dining.

Pleasant  roadside  pub  dating  from  1835  that doubles as the Tintern Steakhouse.  While  there  is a separate lounge/dining room, diners also opt  to  eat  in  the  spacious  main room that bears the trappings of a traditional  public  bar  with  upholstered bench seating, stone flagged floor  and  rugby  union memorabilia dotted around the walls. Across the road  is  riverside  seating  giving splendid views along the River Wye.   Needless to say, steaks "made of 100% pure Welsh beef" and other grilled food  figure largely on the menu along with popular favourites including veggie  and  children's  options.  Live  music  on  Friday evenings. B&B  accommodation. Bus stop nearby.

Traditional and very popular 17th century coaching inn, offering good quality reasonably priced food (Tue - Sun) - a place to enjoy lunch before or after the tour of local Roman attractions. If you believe all "they" say about back street community pubs no longer being popular - pah! - what do "they" know? Just try saying that to the locals and the steady flow of students and visitors who pass this way! The cosy public bar featuring low beams and stonework has a real community feel about it. It's the haunt of sports fans, especially those who follow the oval ball game; the landlord knows a thing or two about rugby having played at a high level himself. The lounge is similarly traditional with figures of Laurel & Hardy keeping an eye on proceedings, while you will probably need a reservation to enjoy the intimacy of the adjoining restaurant. Boules, darts and poker are played, while there is occasional live entertainment. The garden at the rear is spacious with room for little folk to play.

A welcome reappearance as a cask ale outlet for Newport's oldest pub claiming an origin dating back to 1403. It opened in February 2010 after a major refurbishment that has completely refreshened and smartened up the interior. Entry from High Street takes you into a long bar with a servery to match on the right hand side. Two pool tables reside in a lower section while upstairs is a stylish lounge area from where access is gained to the toilets. Eight plasma screens offer various channels while a large screen is available for major sporting events. An extensive menu offers a wide choice of good value main and light meals including large grills and a Sunday carvery. The competitively priced beers are sourced from Felinfoel with two rebadged with names associated with the pub.

On entry the barcounter sporting three new handpumps is on the right, while on the opposite wall are built two attractive fireplaces with various copper artefacts that give the room a homely feel. The decor of the rear lounge section makes good use of contrasting light and dark patterned colours with dark wood in evidence. Pictures of past local sporting heroes and teams adorn the walls and the art gallery extends to the corridor leading to the toilets. The TV is usually on but there is also a CD juke box. Just off the main road on the corner of a busy junction, his well established outlet has a spacious public bar with a pleasant light decor. The mix of furniture - traditional tables and chairs, cosy sofa and tall stools alongside a shelf beneath a large TV screen - is arranged around a massive pillar on which the jukebox is mounted. The lounge doubles as a dining room and also has TV. Both serving counters are well populated with popular drinks fonts among which are three handpulls to dispense real ales from reputable national, family and regional brewers, usually two at a time. Beers currently on sale and those to follow are displayed on a notice board in the lounge. The regular menu is supplemented by blackboard specials while full breakfasts can be had from the Albert Cafe at the rear.

A long established traditional pub with a deep split level interior which many years ago represented the divide between the public and lounge bars. The upper (Dock Street) level has a pleasant niche on the right hand side with a fireplace as its focal point. More seating is provided in and around a large window and stools are positioned alongside a wall with large mirrors opposite the bar counter. The lower (Llanarth Street) level comprises two cosy sections near the side entrance. A menu of favourite pub grub dishes is available during the day. Karaoke is very popular on Thursday evenings. Newport bus station is a few yards away as is the main shopping precinct and market, bringing the pub both regular customers and passing trade.

Fine roadside pub known locally as the "top TA" with a Tredegar coat of arms as its sign. The homely lounge bar has some interesting figures presiding over proceedings. On the large fireplace are paintings of the "TA" in bygone days along with an old "Take Courage" sign indicating its past association with the former brewing giant. That link remains today with the Courage Best as good as you will get anywhere despite its recent nomadic existence around UK before settling in its new home with Wells-Youngs of Bedford. On a lower level the pleasant dining room has a dresser on which an attractive tea service is displayed. The menu offers an appetising choice of dishes (booking advisable). The lounge/dining room area gives access to a sun trap garden at the rear. The traditional public bar is a popular meeting place to catch up with local gossip and enjoy friendly banter.

A former hotel that is deceptively large. Front left is a small public bar, displaying pictures of old Abersychan and sports teams of the past, which has a serving hatch to the corridor. This room is apparently the haunt of the Abersychan Temperance Walking Society! A right turn leads to a large walled outdoor area that includes the quarters of the local resident beasts, i.e. large canines. A more spacious bar and games section is at the rear while there is also a separate skittles alley. Downstairs is an extensive cellar where history has it that Chartist activists hid gunpowder in ovens to keep it dry prior to their fateful march to Newport in 1839. The cellar houses another bar that serves as an occasional venue for music gigs. Real cider or perry is sometimes available. Bus stop nearby.

Built in 1837, at the start of Queen Victoria's reign - hence the name - a small flight of steps gives entry to a corridor displaying local tourist information. The corridor leads to a recently extended traditional public bar on the left. Plainly furnished with a small fireplace, at the side of the servery is a hatch from which customers from another large room can be served. Longer term, B&B facilities are planned to be reintroduced once the guest rooms have been refurbished. The Queen Vic tends to showcase Rhymney beers so the guest is likely to  come from the same stable as the regular Export Ale.

CAMRA award winning pub, offering a wide selection of ales, often including welsh independents, an extensive menu of appetising food and a friendly atmosphere. Its canalside location adds to its appeal while the garden is popular with families. Originally a cowman's cottage in the late seventeenth century, it later served as a wash house, before being extended and called the Railway Hotel, passing to brewers Phillips of Newport. Being on the canal, the pub was ideally suited for deliveries of beer by barge. Phillips were taken over by Simonds, which became part of Courage in 1960. Courage decided to change the name and held a competition to find a new name. A local steelworker won a barrel of beer for his entry; "The Open Hearth".

A hillside village pub very much at the hub of the surrounding community. It was saved from near dereliction in the early 1980s. The result of this labour of love has seen emerge a traditional pub interior that could almost have been there for many decades. The landlady has a photograph album recording progress from the time her family lived in caravans while restoration work was underway to the hugely successful opening night. The main public bar has a cosy feel with plenty of artefacts dotted around and has as its focal point a large fireplace. Perhaps the only bow to modernity is the presence of large modern TV screens for sport etc. There are five letting rooms giving fine views over the valley. A mountain stream running through the cellar helps   maintain a cool temperature. A former Rhymney house, draught Bass is the regular beer offering.
