CAMRA

Firstly, in case you hadn't already spotted it, CAMRA headquarters has a web site. From here you can find all sorts of information about the campaign: press releases, membership information, details of local branches, products, beer festivals, Good Beer Guide information, as well as a comprehensive list of all local branches with web sites.

Our neighbours in Cardiff have a web site while slightly further away are Bristol and North Devon branches.

PUBS

The following pubs in our branch area have web sites that we know of -

The pub chain JD Wetherspoon has several pubs in our branch area.

There is some information on the pubs in Shirenewton at http://www.shirenewton.org.uk/pubs/index.htm.

BREWERIES

Gwent now has four breweries, Cwmbran in Upper Cwmbran, Kingstone in Whitecroft, Warcop in St Brides and the recently opened Blorenge Brewery in Abergavenny.  Sadly Dobbins and Jackson, and Webbs ceased trading in 2007.

Several other South Wales breweries have a presence - Brains and Bullmastiff in Cardiff, Otley in Treforest, Vale of Glamorgan in Cowbridge, Tomos Watkin in Swansea and Felinfoel in Llanelli.

Other nearby breweries whose beers are readily available in Gwent include Wye Valley and Spinning Dog in Hereford and the Forest of Dean based Freeminer Brewery.

BEER (general) / CIDER

There is a newsgroup devoted to real ale. It can be found at uk.food+drink.real-ale.

A Welsh Real Ale outlet is based at the Meadow Farm Shop near Tintern.

A useful site for all kinds of beer related information is the British Beer & Pub Association while SIBA represents small, independent breweries.

Cask Marque is an organisation which was set up to encourage landlords to keep high quality real ale.

Steven Williams is curator of The National Pub & Brewery History Website.

There is a fairly local group of individuals who are dedicated to supping real ale and who go by the name of RATS - the Real Ale Tasting Society - more info from sec-RAT-ary David Jones.

Cider and perry lovers should look at the website of the Welsh Cider Society (Cymdeithas Seidr Cymru).

If you are interested in buying beer from the Wessex Craft Brewers Co-operative they have an e-commerce site where this can be done.

TRAVEL AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Traveline should become the main entry point for public transport information when it is fully functional. In the meantime http://www.pti.org.uk has some good information.

For rail travel use The TrainLine.

A well designed site with lots of information about the railways of Wales, covering main line, private and narrow gauge is at http://members.aol.com/WalesRails/index.htm.

There is a  good site for general information about the county of Monmouthshire at http://www.monmouthshire.org.uk.

For tourist information a good starting point is the Wales Tourist Board while the Wye Valley has its own tourist information site.

If you are following the trail dedicated to local author Alexander Cordell you can find information on the Cordell Country website.

The top websites in Wales are included at Wales Online - why not vote for Gwent CAMRA!

The five local authorities which are covered by our branch area are Newport, Torfaen, MonmouthshireIslwyn and Blaenau Gwent.

For activities far more healthy than drinking beer see the site for Newport Outdoor Group, and for pastimes which do seem to involve drinking copious quantities there are sites for Isca Morrismen and Full Moon Morris.

Walkers who are tackling the Offas Dyke footpath on the Welsh - English border should look at http://www.offas-dyke.co.uk/index.htm

Now within our branch area is Crosskeys but this site has an excellent set of links to local and Welsh pages and another one, based in Blackwood, is The Valley Connection.

If you are interested in tracing your family tree have a look at Gwent Family History Society. Also available online is Kelly's Directory of Monmouthshire for 1901 which may assist in this pursuit.

SPORT

Beer and sport are often associated so have a look at the Newport County AFC (football) and Newport, Pontypool, Abertillery and Ebbw Vale Rugby Clubs sites.

There is also an excellent one for Glamorgan County Cricket Club who play some of their matches in Gwent.
